Employer of the year - Rochford Business Awards 2024

The Rayleigh Club, Hullbridge, was the place to be on the 29th February. Rochford borough's finest businesses were assembled to celebrate their achievements over 11 categories.

Butlers were delighted to be finalists in two categories, Employer of the year and Micro business of the year. The competition was strong and we were simply appreciative to be in the room as a finalist. However, we were delighted to be awarded Employer of the year! The judges were "impressed how we have created an environment were our team can enjoy a fulfilling career."

We thought we would share some of our application which demonstrated why the judges awarded us this award:

At Butlers, our commitment is to create an environment where the brightest professionals, both present and future, can embark on a fulfilling long-term career. We prioritise the value and continuous development of our team, ensuring their work integrates as seamlessly as possible into their personal lives.

A testament to our innovative approach is our unique work contract for parents, allowing them to work flexible schedules during school terms and condensed hours in school holidays. Additionally, we proudly stand as the only accounting firm we know of to close for two weeks of annual leave over the Christmas holidays, providing our team with invaluable quality family time during this special season.  This is only achievable with incredible teamwork and exceptional communication with our clients.

Our dedication to team cohesion and improvement is evident in our strategic team days held throughout the year. These offsite sessions include not only employed team members but also volunteer work experience participants, fostering a collaborative environment for diverse perspectives.

At Butlers, inclusivity is paramount. Our policies on equal opportunities, diversity, and inclusion are not just documents; they are living, evolving principles. We involve the entire team in discussions and decisions, ensuring a collaborative and organic process for policy changes, as exemplified by our recent consultation on the annual leave policy.

Supporting our team's well-being is a priority. All team members have access to on-demand well-being courses, along with 1-2-1 counselling from CABA. This support has proven invaluable during challenging times, covering issues such as bereavement, cancer, divorce, and exam-related worry.

Our commitment to professional development is personalised and comprehensive. From informal learning through live remote courses to formal apprenticeships in a college setting to obtain a variety of industry recognised qualifications, each team member follows a unique path. All development plans include paid study time, exam sittings, all learning materials, exam sittings, resits as well as complete and unlimited access to resources like Mercia Training Courses and the ICAEW library.

Our team's happiness and motivation translate into exceptional client service, evident in the positive reviews we regularly receive. We celebrate these successes on social media, showcasing the faces behind the outstanding service.

Fundamentally, we prioritise a healthy work environment by challenging traditional practices. From flexible lunch breaks and a trusting approach to timekeeping to providing diverse career experience and encouraging knowledge sharing to the discouragement of overtime, our commitment is to remove historic accountancy firm toxic practices and foster a supportive culture.

At Butlers, we don't just develop accountants; we nurture individuals, recognising that personal growth contributes to professional success. Our team isn't just a workforce; they are partners in creating a workplace that stands out in its commitment to excellence and well-being.

If you would like to become part of the team at Butlers Chartered Accountants we are always looking for passionate people to become part of our team. Follow us on social media or contact the office for our latest vacancies.
